Biography

Bae Yong-kyun was born in Tae-gu on November 20, 1951. Since high school his studies take an artistic direction and Bae graduates with a thesis on the pedagogical-formative function of the arts. He established himself as a painter, and still teaches at the Academy of Art in his hometown. In 1989, after eight years of work, using only his own means and non-professional actors, he managed to complete his first film experience (Why Did Bodhi-Dharma Leave for the East?) In the same year he won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. and is purchased and distributed in numerous countries. Six years later, Bae made his second film, The People in White.
