Born in 1991, Byun studied FilmTv and Multimedia and Oriental philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University.
His short film Horn (2014) was presented at the Busan International Film Festival. "The Chicken of Wuzuh" was also presented at the Busan International Film Festival, and received the Golden Reel Award at the Asian Pacific Film Festival. The film "Hands and Wings" won Best Short Film at the Tel Aviv LGBT Film Festival.
