Biography

Born in Seoul in 1952, he is one of the most famous and acclaimed directors in Korea, thanks to the success of his films A Petal in 1996 and Timeless, Bottomless, Bad Movie in 1997. His works combine different styles of filmmaking and tell stories of great effect. Passage to Buddha in 1993 won the Alfred Bauer Prize in Berlin. In 1996 A Petal was considered best film at both the Asia Pacific Festival and the Bangkok Film Festival. In 1997 the Rotterdam Film Festival dedicated a retrospective to him presenting eight of his films and, in the same year, his Timeless, Bottomless, Bad Movie won the Special Critics' Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival, while in 1999 Lies was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
