Jeon Kyu-hwan began his film career in a peculiar way, as a manager of actors such as Cho Jae-hyun and Sul Kyung-gu. He made his directorial debut without any academic training with the self-produced urban-themed trilogy, "The Town". In 2011 with From Seoul to Varanasi he changed course by focusing the story on a tormented love story, and the film was invited to compete at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2012. With The Weight he was awarded the "Queer Lion" at the Venice Film Festival.
