Born in 1983, he graduated from the prestigious Sungkyunkwan University with a dual degree in sports science and acting. He then specialized in film directing at the Korean Academy in Film Arts (KAFA). Kim Ui Seok won the Audience Award after college with his short film "Bon Appétit" (2009) won the audience award at the Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival with "Midnight Express" in 2010. In 2015 he won the Filmgate Scenario Contest with "Dishonor". In 2017 he won the New Currents Award section at the Busan International Film Festival with "After My Death", his first feature film.
