Born in 1968, in Seoul, Shin Dong-il studied German Language and Literature at Korea University, as well as earning a diploma from the Korea Academy of Film Arts. As an assistant director, he worked on films such as Jung Byeong-gak's "Corset" (1996) and Park Jae-ho's "Poison" (1997). He has also collaborated in the creation of numerous cultural programs for television. In 2003 he participated in the Cannes Film Festival with the short film "The Holy Family".
