The highlight of these celebrations is the 19th Monterrey International Film Festival, organized in cooperation with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), with the aim of highlighting the exceptional diversity and talent of Korean cinema. The Mexican Film Festival will be held from September 28 to October 4.

One of the most anticipated events of the festival is the tribute to renowned Korean director Yim Soon-rye, the director who was also our guest last year is a prominent figure in the Korean film industry and will be awarded the prestigious “Cabrito de Plata,” a well-deserved recognition for her outstanding contribution to the world of cinema.

The celebrations are not limited to the main festival. Prior to the start of the festival, from September 21 to 28, the National Film Archive in Mexico City will host “Korean Film Week: KAFA 40th Anniversary” (“Semana de Cine Coreano: KAFA 40 años”). This special event will feature a selection of films made by filmmakers who graduated from the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), an institute founded by KOFIC on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

But these celebrations go beyond the screening of films. Events are planned that will promote cultural exchange between Korean and Mexican filmmakers, institutions and film schools. Conversations between Korean and Mexican women filmmakers, in collaboration with prestigious Mexican film institutions such as the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) and the Escuela Nacional de Artes Cinematográficas (ENAC), will further enrich the film experience.

KOFIC President Park Ki-yong stressed the importance of these events, saying that“Korean cinema has the potential to enter this untapped territory, Latin America.”
